Every December, the world pauses to remember the birth of a child in Bethlehem, a child whose arrival changed history forever. To Christians, Christmas is about far more than lights, songs, and celebrations. It is the story of God taking on flesh, entering the world as a tiny baby in the womb of a young mother. That reality carries profound meaning for how we see life today.

God could have chosen to have Jesus wander out of the desert and begin his ministry here on Earth as an adult. He chose a better way! The Savior of all humanity chose to offer redemption to the world by coming as an embryo. All embryos are precious human beings, and their lives must be defended..

As the ProLife Doc, I teach the truth that science and Scripture affirm each other, revealing together that life in the womb is precious and worth protecting. The Christmas story itself makes that truth impossible to ignore.

God Entered the World as a Preborn Child

The angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary was not about a future possibility, but a present reality. “You will conceive and give birth to a son,” he declared. At the moment of conception, Jesus was fully God and fully human. The eternal Son of God did not wait until his birth to become human. He humbled himself to begin his earthly life as a preborn baby, growing within his mother just as every one of us once did.

This tells us something remarkable: if God chose to enter humanity through the smallest, most vulnerable stage of life, then no stage of human development can be dismissed as unimportant. Every child in the womb reflects the same dignity that belonged to the preborn Christ himself.

The Witness of Elizabeth and John

Luke’s Gospel records another powerful moment: Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John the Baptist. At Mary’s greeting, John leaped in the womb. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, recognized the significance of Mary’s pregnancy and called her “the mother of my Lord.” Notice that Elizabeth didn’t say Mary would be the mother of the Lord someday; she already was. The Savior was present and alive in Mary’s womb.

We know that preborn children respond to sound, touch, and even emotion in the womb. The recognition between Jesus and John in their mothers’ wombs may have been a work of the Spirit, but all babies connect to their environment and to the people around them, even before birth.

Joseph’s Courage and Mary’s Surrender

The Christmas story is also about courageous choices. Mary risked misunderstanding, rejection, and hardship by saying yes to God’s plan. Joseph, too, chose to protect both Mary and her child, even when it meant sacrifice. Their willingness to guard life at its most vulnerable stage is a model for us. Today, families facing unplanned pregnancies can find strength in their example: to protect, to trust, and to love, even when circumstances are difficult.

Christmas Points Us to a Culture of Life

At its heart, Christmas is a celebration of life. The Author of life himself entered our world to redeem it. In a culture that often views preborn children as disposable, the nativity story stands as a beautiful contradiction. The shepherds, the angels, and the wise men all celebrated a newborn child, but the miracle began months earlier in Mary’s womb. The message is clear: every life is sacred from the very beginning.

Carrying the Message Forward

When we share the Christmas story, we are also sharing a message of hope for mothers, fathers, and children today. When we commit to protecting human life at every stage of development, we can combine compassion with medical truth to defend those who cannot speak for themselves. The birth of Jesus is not only the reason we celebrate Christmas; it is the foundation for a worldview that cherishes every preborn child as a gift from God.
