A human life is one of the most precious gifts imaginable, and its beginning is a profound event worthy of our reflection, wonder, and respect. For those who advocate for the value and dignity of every human being, the science of conception holds special significance. Understanding what happens at the very start of life helps us appreciate the miracle of human development and equips us to defend the preborn.
In my practice and ministry as the ProLife Doc, I use scientific truths and medical observations to help people see the worth and humanity of my smallest patients, preborn babies in the womb. Let’s take a closer look at the science behind conception and how it supports the belief that human life begins at that very moment.
The Moment of Conception: A Scientific Overview
Conception occurs when a sperm cell from the father successfully fertilizes an egg cell from the mother. This union happens within the fallopian tube and marks the creation of a zygote, the very first stage of human life. From the instant the sperm and egg merge, something extraordinary occurs: a new, genetically unique human being comes into existence.
At the point of fertilization, the zygote possesses all 46 chromosomes—half from the mother and half from the father—that make up the individual’s complete DNA. This genetic blueprint determines everything from eye color to personality traits. It’s not just a potential life; it is NEW LIFE! A living egg and a living sperm unite to create a new and unrepeatable human being at this earliest stage of development.
The Preborn Are Distinct, Living, and Human
The science is clear: from the moment of conception, the preborn exhibit the three essential criteria that define personhood:
- Distinct: The zygote is not merely a part of the mother or father. It is a separate entity with its own unique DNA, making it a distinct individual.
- Living: The zygote grows through cellular division, metabolizes nutrients, and produces energy—all hallmark signs of life.
- Human: The zygote is not a potential human but a human at a specific developmental stage, much like a toddler or an adolescent.
This truth is affirmed by scientific consensus. Biologists across the field of embryology agree that human development begins with fertilization, the moment when a new organism is formed. This is not a philosophical or theological claim; it’s a biological fact rooted in decades of research.
Development Begins Immediately
Within hours of conception, the zygote begins a process of rapid cell division, transforming into a blastocyst as it travels toward the uterus for implantation. By the end of the first week, this tiny human is composed of hundreds of cells and is already preparing for the next stage of development.
By the third week, the preborn child’s heart starts to beat—a sound that has moved countless parents to tears during ultrasounds. Neural development begins shortly after, laying the foundation for the brain and spinal cord. Every stage of this process builds upon the incredible blueprint established at conception. At one month there are over 1 billion cells in this person. The average adult is made up of approximately 35 trillion cells, all of them containing the same genetic information encoded in every single cell of their body since the moment of conception.
Why This Matters: Affirming the Value of Life
Understanding the science of conception underscores a vital truth: every human life is valuable, not because of its size, stage, or abilities, but because of its inherent dignity as a person made in the image of God. Recognizing life at conception is not just a scientific reality; it’s also a call to action for those who value justice and compassion.
When we acknowledge the humanity of the preborn, we affirm their right to life and challenge a culture that too often dismisses or devalues them. As advocates for life, it’s our privilege and responsibility to share this truth with others—lovingly and confidently.
Stand for Life
The science of conception leaves no doubt: life begins at the moment of fertilization. This profound truth gives us a foundation to protect and cherish the preborn, equipping us to defend their right to life with compassion and confidence.
