Dr. William Lile, known nation-wide as the “Pro-Life Doc”, was a guest on the Creation Today Ministry radio show with host Eric Hovind. Dr. Lile discusses his favorite theme: little babies, made in the image and likeness of God, that he lovingly brings into this world, and his ongoing battle to protect the pre-born from the scourge of abortion.
Embedded below is a video of the interview, in which Dr. Lile engages in a wide-ranging interview on his work and the spiritual mission that guides it.
At one point in the show, the host’s video feed cuts out due to some infrastructure work going on outside his studio. Not a problem for Dr. Lile! Left on his own, he gives us a fascinating glimpse into some of his experiences as a pro-life advocate, showing the amazing workings of God in the people whose lives he has touched.
Roe v. Wade in the Crosshairs
One critical topic of Dr. Lile’s discussion is Roe v. Wade, the United States Supreme Court’s 1973 decision which purported to establish a federal Constitutional right to obtain an abortion. While the Court has upheld this “right” in several cases since Roe, the composition of the Court has changed dramatically since then. Dr. Lile is confident that Roe is on the brink of being overturned.
The new case is Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, was argued before the Court in December. The decision is likely to be handed down in June. Dobbs involves a Mississippi law which would ban abortion after 15 weeks gestation, with very limited exceptions. And while the law does not outlaw abortion outright, it attacks one of the core ideas at the heart of Roe v. Wade: “viability”–that is, the point at which a baby can survive outside of the womb.
But as Dr. Lile points out, viability is a meaningless concept, because babies are persons as soon as they are conceived. Babies have their own unique genetic make-up distinct from either parent. They can even have a different blood type than their own mother! If the Mississippi law is allowed to stand, it eviscerates the holding of Roe v. Wade.
If the Court goes further and finds that there is no constitutional right to abortion, it would be a significant victory for the cause of life. But, as Dr. Lile points out, overturning Roe will not end the war. Instead, it would send the abortion issue back to the states. Dr. Lile issues an important admonition: pro-life advocates have to prepare now to continue the fight in 50 different state legislatures and courthouses.
A Patient is a Person, and Persons Have Rights
In his practice, Dr. Lile’s patients are not just the mothers he cares for, but their babies. High risk pregnancy centers around the world have performed life-saving surgeries on babies in the womb. Today, pre-born babies can have heart surgery, spine surgery, blood transfusions, and a vast number of other medical procedures to cure or repair problems and help them live a better life. He has even seen cases where, to save their lives, twins were born months apart!
One of Dr. Lile’s favorite sayings is: “A patient is a person, no matter how small.” And if patients are persons, then persons are entitled to all the rights that other persons have, including the right to live.
