If you want to be amazed, truly astonished, I suggest looking deeper into God’s design for the miraculous and complex process of human reproduction.

As an obstetrician and Christ-follower, I’ve spent decades witnessing the awe-inspiring process of life unfolding in the womb. Every stage of development carries the unmistakable signature of our Creator, and one of the most extraordinary examples of that handiwork is the placenta. This often-overlooked organ is not only an essential component in sustaining life, but a powerful testimony to the intricate design behind every human pregnancy.

The placenta is temporary in duration but eternal in meaning. It symbolically points to a greater truth: that from the very moment of conception, a preborn child is not only alive but is also in possession of a God-given identity and purpose.

The Placenta: Life’s First Lifeline

The placenta forms within days after conception and is fully functional by the end of the first trimester. By that point, it has already become the lifeline between mother and child. It provides oxygen and nutrients, removes waste, produces vital hormones, supports immune function, and even acts as a protective barrier between the new life and the dangers of the outside world. This one organ performs the work of multiple systems, and it does so with astonishing precision.

What amazes me most is how the placenta is an organ that belongs simultaneously to both mother and baby. It’s connected by direct line to the baby, but interfaces perfectly with the mother’s body. It is the only organ shared between two individuals who each have distinct DNA. If this exchange weren’t carefully controlled, the mother’s immune system would reject the baby as foreign. But instead, the placenta manages to keep peace, carefully communicating between the two and ensuring balance and survival.

Scientists still struggle to understand how the placenta “knows” how to do this. It behaves almost like an intelligent system, responding dynamically to the needs of the growing baby. In fact, the placenta doesn’t just meet those needs; it anticipates them. As early as six weeks into pregnancy, the placenta begins adjusting maternal physiology to better support the baby. It increases blood volume, modifies metabolism, and even alters the mother’s cardiovascular function. This is not random or accidental. It is a sophisticated, preprogrammed process that shouts design.

Miracle in the Womb

Modern research confirms what many of us have long known: the placenta is a marvel of biology that defies a purely evolutionary explanation. It adapts in real-time, modifies gene expression, and even delivers stem cells to aid in fetal development. In high-risk pregnancies, it can compensate to protect the baby’s growth and health. This is not trial-and-error. This is purposeful.

There is no prototype in the world of man-made engineering that even comes close to replicating what the placenta accomplishes during those nine months. Every heartbeat, every breath, every brain cell forming in the preborn baby is supported by the placenta’s efforts. Yet as soon as the baby is born, the placenta completes its work and detaches itself. Its mission is finished.

For years, I’ve said, “A patient is a person, no matter how small.” The placenta strengthens and supports my belief in that truth. It works from day one to serve a living human being. Its existence and complexity would make no sense if the baby were merely a meaningless clump of cells. Instead, everything about the placenta speaks to intentional care for a vulnerable patient already recognized by the body as someone to protect and nurture.

A Message Worth Sharing

As Christians and advocates for life, we need to share this message: the miracle of life is not just spiritual; it is scientific. The placenta is one of many biological wonders that underscore the humanity of the preborn and the loving intentionality of our Creator. When we understand this, we see that our convictions about protecting life are not just emotional or theological, but are rooted in evidence that even secular medicine must acknowledge.
